Well, here we are. May has come at last! And as the Spring semester ends, so does our Barnard Blog. Our students are busy finishing term papers, taking final exams, and getting ready for their next adventure–be it a summer internship here in the city, a study abroad program, or some time at home with friends and family. Graduating seniors will be starting new jobs soon. We wish them and all our students good luck with whatever comes next!
Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of our Barnard Bloggers, who took time out of very busy schedules to share their thoughts and lives with us. Each of them fully lives up to the famous title of “Strong, Beautiful Barnard Woman”! We are proud to have them as members of our community.
And we can’t wait to meet those of you who will be joining us on campus this fall! You are busy these days, too. You’re getting ready for final exams of your own, and looking forward to a well-earned rest before you get ready to start your first year of college. We hope that reading about the experiences and activities of our students has helped give you a sense of real life at Barnard College.
Our Enrolling Students Website will answer many questions about what comes next, including Residence Life, Health Services, New Student Orientation, and much more. It also provides essential forms that need to be submitted throughout the summer (the first of which is due May 30!) and a timeline to follow. Please visit the site soon and regularly: http://www.barnard.edu/admiss/matric_new/index.html
Good luck with the end of your semester, and have a wonderful summer!

The Varsity Show this year was AMAZING!!!!!!!!
For those unacquainted with the concept, The V Show is one of Columbia’s more amusing campus traditions, an original student musical performed every Spring. This year marked the 114th year of the V Show, and if I may say so, the best one ever (including the time a young Rogers and Hammerstein wrote it– not kidding about that, they actually did). This Thursday was the annual Student Leadership Dinner hosted by the Student Government Association and the College Activities Office. Complete with fancy dinner, the college song, and the awarding of mysterious “Bear Pins,” the evening was amazingly Barnard (and yes, Barnard is an adjective. Judith Shapiro used it to describe the “Athena is my Homegirl” shirts). I was incredibly honored to be one of the over 150 Barnard students recognized during the evening, Read more »

I, much like Rachel, have unfortunately been totally MIA from blogging but it’s because of my thesis…which I finally completed! All 88 pages of it are bound and ready to be read by my thesis adviser and one other reader. It was a really transformative experience, a true endeavor that took a lot of work, a few sleepless nights, but overall one of the most rewarding things I’ve done to date. It was hard to print it out and have it be so final, since it’s the kind of project that could go on forever. Read more »

I have been inexcusably absent from the blogosphere recently for one very large reason: my colloquium paper. I am only a sophomore, so this 25 page paper is the longest and most detailed academic paper I have ever completed. While I was writing it, I hated it, but now, I’m really glad that I did it. Seriously. Read more »

As graduation nears, some seniors are gearing up for another “summer vacation” before going back to school for graduate work, some are escaping the idea of getting a “real world” job, some still applying, and some are taking it easy after having found a job already. I wouldn’t say I am taking it easy… especially in the next week, but I have found a job, thankfully! Read more »

One of my favorite things to do when I’ve missed Barnard over the past four months is visit the Barnard News Center. It’s a great way to stay in tune to what’s going on at the College, and also a lovely way to share the excitement of fellow Barnard students, Barnard faculty members and friends of Barnard.
This week’s stories include Mayor Bloomberg’s designation as graduation speaker; the naming of Achsah Guibbory, my former English professor, as a Guggenheim Fellow; an article on designer Amanda Brotman ‘02; Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi speaking at Barnard; the printing of an ‘06 alumna’s fiction in the Missouri Review; and the announcement of two Barnard seniors as Fulbright Scholarship winners.
Barnard students share a pride in the accomplishments of their peers and others associated with the College, so I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say congratulations to those mentioned for making the Barnard headlines, and thanks for inspiring us all!

My entire life I have always played sports, so when I got to Barnard, I was looking for a way to stay involved. I decided to join Columbia University Roadrunners, our school’s running club affiliated with New York Roadrunners. The club has a great relationship with New York Roadrunners, who lets us each run four races per semester for free (and a reduced price if we want to run more than that). Its a huge club, so you can get as involved as you want- some people run one race a year, others run every single one. Read more »
